The Lubumbashi derby once again revealed the dangerous climate surrounding Congolese football. TP Mazembe and FC Saint‑Éloi Lupopo met on 8 March in a match expected to showcase the best of Illicocash Ligue 1. Instead, violence erupted at halftime inside the TP Mazembe Stadium, forcing officials to stop the match. Supporters clashed on the pitch and in the stands, creating a chaotic scene that highlighted long‑standing tensions between the two rivals.
A Derby Marked by Repeated Incidents
This confrontation followed an earlier tragedy during the first leg, where clashes at the Frédéric Kibassa Maliba Stadium caused the death of a Mazembe supporter. Analysts now warn that the rivalry has reached a critical point. Sports analyst Richard Kadima blamed organizers for ignoring essential security measures. He noted the low number of police officers and their lack of proper equipment. Kadima also criticized certain club officials for inflaming tensions with provocative messages before the match.

The TP Mazembe Stadium suffered heavy damage, including more than 500 destroyed seats and several vandalized sections. The venue remains the only CAF‑ and FIFA‑approved stadium in the DRC, making the destruction even more concerning. Lupopo recently used the same stadium for its CAF Champions League matches, and Maniema Union must play a Confederation Cup quarterfinal there next weekend. Kadima questioned how such a crucial facility could be targeted without consequences.
Sanctions Expected Soon
The LINAFOOT Management Committee suspended the match result while awaiting the officials’ report. Both clubs condemned the violence but blamed each other for the destruction. Heavy sanctions are expected as the league attempts to restore credibility and protect the future of Congolese football.
