Cameroon’s 1–0 defeat to Australia in the FIFA Series reopened debate around the team’s preparation after head coach David Pagou admitted he misunderstood the updated substitution rule. The Cameroon FIFA Series confusion added pressure on a squad still trying to find stability.

Cameroon FIFA Series substitution rule

Pagou made only three substitutions, even though IFAB now allows eight changes in friendly matches. Teams may even reach 11 substitutions if both sides agree. Australia used the rule fully, rotating eight players and increasing their intensity as the match progressed.

Pagou clarifies his decision

Pagou said he believed the regulations still limited teams to five substitutions. His staff prepared the match plan using that interpretation, which left several Cameroonian players unused. He explained that the technical team wanted to split minutes across both friendlies, with one group playing the first match and another group completing the second. Cameroon travelled with 25 players, and the staff expected each group to complete a full match.

Impact on Cameroon’s performance

The misunderstanding affected Cameroon’s rhythm after halftime. Australia introduced fresh legs, while Cameroon kept the same structure. Jordan Bos scored the only goal, and Pagou initially thought a substitute had scored. The confusion exposed communication gaps inside the technical setup. Cameroon must adjust quickly before the next match to ensure proper rotation and tactical balance.
